What are the best sweetners?
I'll start by saying, no to sugar, no to the blue, pink and yellow packets you so often see at every restaurant table. These contain, saccharin, sucralose, maltodextrin or even aspertame. As a side note products toting the "low carb" label, should be trained to look at the ingredients and see if you spot these mentioned ingredients. Wheat gluten is also a no, like you might find in low carb tortillas.
The correct answer is dependent on two factors:
- Does your sweetner have a glycemic index response? If so, consider not using this product. To much of it, might trigger an insulin response. Look for a Zero glycemic response
- Does it have an unsavory aftertaste? Some users may like one sugar substitute vs. another.
List of Sugar Substitutes:
(Note: Erythritol and Mannitol have a zero glycemic index)
Packet sweetners like Stevia Leaf, Truvia, and Sweet Leaf are good sweetners to use. Another popular one is called "Good as Sugar" It contains 97g of carbs, but it is offset with 96g of dietary fiber for a net carb of 1. It's main ingredient is chicory root. Here's a link for that: Good as Sugar
Another contender is Monk Fruit Blends. I haven't tried this one yet, but it's on my to do list:
